Two CAL FIRE Contractors Killed in Plane Crash in Humboldt County, CA

While not assigned to an incident, CAL FIRE Chief Joe Tyler recognized their role in the agency's aviation program.

Two contractors with CAL FIRE were killed in a plane crash Tuesday in Humboldt County.

The single-engine Cessnao 206 went down at the McClellan Airport, KCRA reported.

The victims, Gabe Kulp, the pilot, and Thomas Smith, a mechanic, work for Amentum, an aviation company contracted with Cal Fire.

"Although the employees were not assigned to a CAL FIRE incident, it is important to recognize the vital role they play in supporting CAL FIRE's Aviation Program. I want to thank the Humboldt Del Norte Unit, Incident Management Team 2, Northern Region Staff and our Aviation and Fire Protection Program Staff who have experienced another tragic loss. Your professionalism, and respect for the deceased throughout this process is appreciated beyond words,"  CAL FIRE Chief Joe Tyler wrote in a statement.
